Thoubal district is the cultural heartland of Manipur, lying to the east of Imphal in the fertile valley. It is home to the famous Khongjom War Memorial honoring the Battle of Khongjom (1891), the serene Waithou Lake, and the town of Wangkhei — historic for traditional Manipuri polo and martial arts (Thang-Ta). The district is an important hub for handloom weaving.
